Welcome to the sixth edition of the Media Services information web page for the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.

As the Queen’s Baton Relay winds its way around the Commonwealth en route to the Opening Ceremony, we’re reminded of the great support already offered to us by the media. The world’s longest and most inclusive relay is being beautifully captured by both international and domestic media. We hope that this early ‘colour’ opportunity demonstrates how significant our commitment is to all media.

Our professional support teams from across the organisation are available to assist you now to ensure your planning continues to run smoothly. We hope you can join us to cover all aspects of the games.

ACCREDITATION

Media Accreditation is now open.

The M2006 Media Accreditation department has made contact with media organisations to establish preliminary requirements and initiate the application process.

Please be aware that if you have expressed interest, this has been registered and you will be contacted in due course. Should you receive any communication from either M2006 or your respective CGA, please follow the instructions and/or provide the necessary information as soon as possible.

The final Rate Card catalogue is now available.

The Rate Card Catalogue includes a list of the products and services available for rent or purchase, including consumables, during the Games and is also a comprehensive guide of the M2006 Procurement department’s policies and procedures for ordering electronically and manually, and conditions associated with rate card.

Media transport will be provided for all accredited media to all competition venues and media hotels throughout the Games. Travel to each venue will be via a dedicated media bus service. All media will also have access to free public transport.

MEDIA VOLUNTEERS

At an event the size of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games, volunteers play a vital role in ensuring the crucial success of the event. The Games has had on overwhelming response to the call for volunteers, ensuring that positions will be filled by highly motivated and enthusiastic people from all walks of life. These volunteers will assist across the Games in a wide range of roles.

The Games will have dedicated Media Support Volunteers providing services to assist accredited media at the Main Press Centre (MPC) and the Venue Media Centres in all competition venues. Media Support roles include positions such as Media Assistants, Tribune Supervisors and Assistants, Mixed Zone Assistants and Photo Assistants. Many of the Media Services Volunteers have previous experience within the journalism, copywriting, marketing, and media fields. All Media Services Volunteers will be lead by an experienced Media Services team.

All Media Services staff working at the Games are here to assist you and to make your job as easy as possible. Please do not hesitate to ask for assistance from any one of our staff during your time at the Games.

Macedon Ranges and Spa Country

For over 150 years, people have been drawn to the health-giving qualities of natural mineral springs that bubble up around the towns of Daylesford and Hepburn Springs, one and a half hours from Melbourne. The region boasts Australia’s largest concentration of mineral springs. More than 70 springs can be found here, each with their own distinctive flavour. Indulge in a relaxing spa, followed with a massage to revitalise your body. Then stay in boutique accommodation – such as a heritage guest house, bed & breakfast, country home or lakeside property.

State of the art relaxation awaits in Daylesford and its twin town Hepburn Springs. Renowned as the spa capital of Australia, nowhere else in the country has a higher concentration of naturally occurring mineral springs. Visitors are rediscovering the wondrous healing properties of the area’s spa waters. Spa resorts abound so whether you want to be wrapped in mud, pummelled by a skilled masseuse or treated to a range of beauty therapies, you’re sure to find it here. Just as soothing are the surroundings: sweeping bush country and gently rising mountains providing a calm backdrop to your relaxation getaway.

Lake House Hotel, on the banks of Lake Daylesford, offers rooms with water views and an award-winning restaurant. The Lake House also has a lovely new day spa, Salus, with tree top treatment rooms. Peppers Springs Retreat, built in 1935, has a main building that has been beautifully restored, combining the character of the art deco building with contemporary decor using rich colours. Accommodation comprises a choice of 25 stylish rooms and spa suites and it also has a luxurious day spa that offers a variety of treatments from massages to facials.

For more casual dining head into town and visit the stylish Frangos and Frangos, sit back by the open fire and enjoy one of their mouth watering pizzas and a glass of local wine. Cliffy's combines a fantastic café and larder in a lovely old shop front with an eclectic interior with scattered cushions and lots of colours. Homemade cakes and cookies on display are tempting enough to entice some time to spend idle and read a magazine.

If you’re feeling like a bit of culture then head to the Convent Gallery, an old convent that has been transformed into an art gallery, café and bar. The grounds provide a peaceful retreat and an afternoon can be spent wandering around enjoying the local artisans' creative pieces. Lavandula Lavender Farm are growers of premium lavender, oils and grapes. On site there is a café that serves delicious lavender scones and tea. Set beside a bubbling creek among hills, farmland and forest, the lavender fields are neatly patterned, and matched with herb, cottage and potage gardens and provide a picturesque backdrop.

After all the grazing you may feel the need to do some gentle exercise. Take to one of the many walking tracks around the area and discover some beautiful Australian bush. Walking around Lake Daylesford you can take some bottles and fill them up with your own mineral water from one of the pumps. Daylesford also has a wonderful collection of book, antique and aromatherapy shops. Don’t miss the Lake Daylesford Book Barn and the Avant Garden Bookshop and enjoy some browsing.

Daylesford was recently listed as one of the world’s ‘funkiest towns’ by the British Airways magazine High Life. The magazine praised Daylesford for its mineral springs, fantastic café scene and its friendly nature towards visitors. Check it out for yourself.
