Matthew Clay of England celebrates
winning the Men's 50m Backstroke
final.
England’s Matthew Clay has delivered a winning performance to claim the Men’s 50m Backstroke Final.
Swimming at his first Commonwealth Games, Clay’s time of 25.04 narrowly beat his teammate Liam Tancock.
"I'm happy for him," said Tancock. "I'd like to have won it here, but I'm pretty pleased with how I've gone."
Tancock came to the Games as a gold medal possibility and was race favourite after his record breaking swim in the second Semi-Final. He also broke the British record in the 50m Backstroke at the World Championship Trials in Manchester, 2005, which he described as his finest sporting moment.
South Africa’s Johannes Zandberg’s bronze medal swim was a repeat performance of Manchester. This is his second medal as he was a member of the winning 4 x 100m Men’s Relay team on Day One of competition.
Finishing fourth, Matt Welsh came to the Games as Australia's leading Backstroke exponent. At the Sydney 2000 Olympics, he became only the fourth Australian since 1900 to win an Olympic medal in Backstroke.
