The Men’s Pole Vault has been won by Australian Steve Hooker in a Games Record vault of 5.80m, out-jumping fellow countryman and former world champion Dmitri Markov, who took silver in a leap of 5.60m.
Hooker’s first attempt in the final was at the 5.60m height, easily clearing and going on to post a top jump of 5.80m with only one attempt.
After wrapping-up the gold medal, Hooker had three attempts at trying to exceed the six metre mark but was unsuccessful.
One of the medal favourite’s going into the event, Paul Burgess of Australia started with Hooker at 5.60m, but had three unsuccessful vaults and was subsequently eliminated from competition.
England’s Steven Lewis posted a vault of 5.50m to take out the bronze.
